The Lagoon Nebula is a hydrogen-rich emission nebula.
​
According to scientists, in this nebula a lot of new stars are born, which are formed in the so-called "globules" (small dark points in the photo between the nebula's clouds).
​
It was discovered by Giovanni Podjerne before 1654.
​
It is best observed during the summer from mid to late summer in the southern sky.
​
It can be observed with medium-sized binoculars with a hydrogen or UHC filter screwed in.
​
The distance from Earth of this nebula is 4,100 light years.
The size of this nebula is approximately 110 x 40 light years.
