It was discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1779.
Its distance from Earth is estimated at 29 million light years.
It is best observed in spring, when it is highest in the sky.
It can be observed as a speck through 15-centimeter telescopes in good conditions.
Its diameter is estimated to be 130,000 light years.
It is suspected to have 400 billion stars and a mass of 140 billion solar masses.
