Omega Centauri is a globular cluster of stars.

​

In ancient times around 130 AD Prometheus described this star cluster as one star. The non-stellar nature of the object was discovered by Edmond Halley in 1677.

It extends over an area of 170 light years.

Omega Centauri contains 10 million stars.​

Scientists believe that Omega Centauri is the remnant of the core of a dwarf galaxy absorbed by the Milky Way. At the center of this cluster is a black hole with a mass of 40,000. masses of the Sun.

​
