A hydrogen-rich emission nebula formed about 4 million years ago.

​

It was discovered by Lewis Swift in 1865.

​

It is approximately 5,200 light years away from Earth.

​

It is best observed in winter in an area where the southern part of the sky is exposed.

​

You can observe it with large binoculars with a hydrogen filter installed.

​

The Rosette Nebula spans approximately 130 light-years.

​

At the center of the nebula is the cluster NGC 2244, which was discovered earlier than the nebula itself.
